The East Coast of Cornwall is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The south east coastline is packed with beaches, dog friendly walks along the coast path and plenty of activities the kids will love. The East Cornwall beaches are peaceful during the Autumn, the sea is still warm, and Cornwall’s micro-climate is temperate during October and November. Here are ten activities to enjoy in East Cornwall in Autumn.
Bring your dog!
The East Coast of Cornwall is very welcoming to dogs. There are many scenic walks with spectacular views to choose from and many of the local beaches are dog friendly. Our closest beach, Kingsand Beach, welcomes dogs all year round and most of the local pubs are dog friendly and happy to provide water bowls.
Natural Beauty!
The South West Coastal Path stretches for 630 miles from Minehead in Somerset, along the coasts of Devon and Cornwall, to Poole Harbour in Dorset. You can join the path by stepping outside the front door of Blue Monkey and head left or right to explore the beautiful south east coastline in either direction. Kids will love the secret smuggler’s coves!
East Cornwall Beaches
There are two beaches within five minutes-walk of Blue Monkey and the many coves and beaches of Whitsand Bay are within 10 minutes-drive. Whitsand Bay is arguably the finest of the south east Cornwall beaches, where you can learn to surf, and the 4 miles stretch of sand is dog friendly making it perfect for Autumn walks.
Step Back in Time
A visit to the car free fishing village of Polperro is like stepping back in time. Nestled between steep hills the natural beauty of the harbour has attracted artists and smugglers alike! Visit the art galleries, the smuggler’s museum, the tidal pool and delicious seafood restaurants.
Tamar River Cruise
Charter a boat or join a cruise – the peaceful beauty of the Tamar river is a lovely place to while away an Autumn afternoon. Kids will love the cataract gorge cruise, just 50 minutes long, between steep cliffs and offering cascade views.
Things to do in the Rain
The weather in East Cornwall is mild in the Autumn, but nowhere escapes the rain! Don’t let that put you off as there’s always plenty to do, whatever the weather.
Lanhydrock
The East Coast of Cornwall is home to many beautiful old houses and gardens. 50 minutes-drive from Blue Monkey will take you to Lanhydrock National Trust Victorian country house and estate. If it’s raining, you can explore the early 17th Century Jacobean house where you can get a glimpse of life in the Victorian era.
Jamaica Inn
Along the A30 from Landydrock is the notorious Jamaica Inn where you will find a museum devoted to smugglers and Daphne Du Maurier who immortalised the Inn in her famous novel. Treat yourself to Cornish ales and delicious pub grub.
Top Tip: The Inn is dog friendly and situated in an area of wild natural beauty providing easy access to lots of great walks.
Carnglaze Caverns
30-minutes-drive from Blue Monkey will take you to Carnglaze Caverns. The ultimate all weather underground adventure through hand created caverns of cathedral proportions! Adults and Kids alike will love journeying 60m below ground to the underground crystal lake of clear blue/green water.
Top Tip: Take sensible footwear and a jumper – it’s cold down there!
Walks and Waterfalls
Golitha Falls, near Liskeard (40 minutes-drive from Blue Monkey) is one of the best know natural beauty spots on Bodmin Moor. The best time to visit is after a heavy rainfall when the cascades and waterfalls are at their most dramatic. Your dog will love the beautiful walks as much as you will!
Wine Tasting!
There are lots of vineyards on the East Coast of Cornwall and many of them offer tours and wine tasting. The Tamar Valley Vineyard is dog friendly and offers guided tours of the market garden and vines through the beautiful surrounding countryside and a chance to taste their award-winning wine.
