Discovering the Great Outdoors
Walking and Cycling: When booking holiday cottages for large groups, you’ll be looking for an area with beautiful countryside you can all explore together. The Rame Peninsula fits the bill perfectly, with the famous South West Coast Path. Cornwall Council gives details on its website of a five-and-a-half mile circular walk starting out from Cawsand. Over mainly easy terrain, this route takes in Penlee Point and Rame Head and offers the chance to spot landmarks including Polhawn Fort. Hiring cycles gives you still more scope, with plenty of trails available in the area. Bikesmart, based in Wadebridge, specialises in hiring out bikes for the Camel Trail. Their number is 01208 814545.
Crabbing and Rockpooling: There are rock pools to explore on the twin beaches of Cawsand and Kingsand, and around Whitsand Bay and Portwrinkle, where your group can discover an array of smaller marine wildlife. The local harbours are also great spots for crabbing, which is especially popular with youngsters, but can also bring out the competitive instinct in groups of adults!
Fishing and Sea Angling: There are many opportunities for fishing of all kinds in the area. If you are seeking fly and coarse fishing, Bake Lakes in Trerulefoot has nine lakes and ponds with fish including trout and carp, offering plenty of scope for larger groups. The information number is 07798 585836. For sea fishing with a difference, up to 11 passengers can hire a purpose-built charter boat from Force Ten Sport Fishing based in Looe, which specialises in shark, reef and wreck fishing. Anyone inspired by the Winter Olympics can try out a range of winter sports all year round at Plymouth Ski Centre, where the facilities include a dry ski slope, snowboarding and tobogganing, plus sno-tube rides. The action is suitable for a wide range of abilities and ages, so your whole group should be able to join in the fun. For details, call 01752 600220. Another winter sport on offer locally is ice skating, at the all-year round rink at Plymouth Pavilions. It’s advisable to book in advance, on 0845 146 1460.
Shooting: The Cart Ridge Shooting Grounds at Tredinnick offer the opportunity to take part in clay pigeon shooting in an outdoor setting. This is another activity where your group can have fun competing, and there is also a clubhouse offering light refreshments to relax after the shoot. It’s essential to book in advance on 01752 851262.
After a day out enjoying any of these activities, you can relax back at Blue Monkey, which has plenty of space for your group to enjoy a leisurely meal or barbecue. And of course one of the greatest benefits of large luxury holiday cottages is that your friends can enjoy a drink and a chat, or perhaps even some computer or board games, late into the night, without worrying about how to get home at the end of the evening.
